Angela Carlberg
Facilitation Coach & Consultant
Angela has over ten years of experience cultivating relationships in state government, academia, and community development sectors where she specializes in facilitating conversations at the intersection of race, gender, policy, and organizational change. As a facilitator for racial equity, she leads with authenticity and humility. Angela believes that embracing a philosophy of liberation is complex and we need to make peace with discomfort. This includes being explicit in our language and having a shared analysis of white supremacy as a framework for understanding the exploitation, extraction, and oppression of BIPOC folx across the diaspora.
Angela was raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and understood blackness only in relationship to her white family and her white environment--often oversimplified and always underrepresented. She recognizes that identity formation is deeply personal and the process to unlearn internalized behaviors is ongoing. Her experience is an asset for navigating dialogues across a range of identities. Angela is able to create and cultivate intentional relationships and she offers grace for others to embark on similar journeys. She is now unapologetically Black.
In her most recent position at the Democracy Collaborative (TDC), Angela provided project management and primary leadership to help advance new work related to establishing community wealth building systems that are democratic and reparative. She worked with grasstops and grassroots cross-sector leaders in Northern Virginia who are collaborating to establish a national model grounded in these principles. The clarity and expertise that Angela brought to issues of race and gender made her one of TDC’s most sought-after thinkers and facilitators-—by her peers on staff and by partners in the field.
Angela earned a bachelor’s degree from Elon University and a master’s degree from The Ohio State University. Her published work includes “Doubly Displaced: Women, Public Housing, and Spatial Access after Hurricane Katrina,“ in the book The Women of Katrina: How Gender, Race, and Class Matter in an American Disaster, and The Challenge to Act: How Progressive Women Activists Reframe American Democracy. In her free time, Angela coaches CrossFit and trains with CHFP Weightlifting Club where she is a nationally ranked Olympic-style weightlifter. Angela believes that fitness should be accessible and inclusive. As a coach, she strives to create spaces where people can move their bodies and realize their strength potential.
